Histology Tech

Location: Lexington, SC
Great opportunity for a Histology Tech in the Central SC area, about one hour from Aiken, SC.

This is a day shift position with very little weekends 
 
Responsibilities of the Histology Tech:
  • Under indirect supervision, accurately and efficiently performs routine and special histologic and cytologic procedures, enabling the pathologists to make professional diagnoses in a timely manner.
  • Prepare surgical and autopsy specimens by embedding, cutting, staining, cover slipping, and labeling.
  • Performs special/immunoperoxidase staining procedures as requested by pathologists.
  • Maintains a log of all surgical, cytology and autopsy specimens received in the Laboratory.
  • Assist pathologists with frozen sectioning/staining and gross dissection procedures, as necessary.
  • Prepare cytology specimens by smearing, centrifuging and cytospinning or making cell blocks, as well as staining, cover slipping and labeling.
  • Assist other physicians with fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy procedures that take place in the Radiology Department or computerized tomography (CT) facility adjacent to the hospital.
  • Perform special procedures, such as processing of muscle/renal/breast biopsies for hormone receptor assays/evaluation and shipping to reference labs/consulting pathologists, as required.
  • Maintain a readily accessible filing system for paraffin blocks and glass slides.
  • Modify existing procedures or develop new techniques at the request of pathologists.
  • Maintain a short-term storage system for formalin/fixed tissue specimens, and dispose of these materials by approved methods when necessary.

Requirements of the Histology Tech:
  • BS or AS degree in Histotechnology required.
  • ASCP registration as a Histologic Technician required.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical training or on-the-job training is required. Previous work experience is preferred.
  • BLS required

The city is located in the middle of the state and is comprised of a diverse variety of neighborhoods, heritages, and historical districts.  Centrally located in the state, the town also offers residents and visitors a number of day trip activities from beach excursions to the mountain retreats. The vibrant city has a number of parks.  Many residents enjoy hiking, kayaking, swimming, running and bike riding in these areas.
